photo: Komperdell Highlander Cork Anti-Shock antishock trekking pole

For a first time buy of trekking poles I think I bought right.

Pros

  • Komperdell has been making poles a long time
  • Great three-year no questions asked warranty
  • Comfortable ergonomic cork grips
  • Twist locks locks are solid and don't protrude
  • Anti-Shock Lockout
  • Clear cm delineations
  • 105-140cm/66cm collapsed

Cons

  • A few ounces heavier than the carbon fiber poles

I've seen people of all ages using them and just wasn't moved to consider them for myself until now. Being a first time buyer of trekking poles I have nothing to compare them to, save for the copious reviews online, so I researched and chose these.

The grip fits my hand comfortably and to test the locks and pole strength I extended them longer than what I'd be using and raised myself off the ground with all my weight on one. It didn't budge or bow in the slightest. The only give was of the spring-loaded anti-shock tip, which can be locked out entirely. This gave me confidence it them being worth what I paid and more.

At the same time I bought my 7-year-old grandson a pair of Komperdell Peak Hunter kids' trekking poles, both purchased from backcountry eBay store for $24.97. I performed the same abusive test on them and they too, passed muster without a shudder. The grips are rubber sized for his smaller hands and the cam lock proves as worthy as the twist lock on mine.
