La Sportiva Vermont

rated 4.5 of 5 stars

The Vermont has been discontinued. If you're looking for something new, check out the best backpacking boots for 2024.

CORRECTION FROM FIRST SUBMISSION: After many years in Fabianos used in the Cascades, Coast range, and the High Dez I replaced them with the LaSportiva. I was concerned they would not handle the job. However, the Vermonts are great, simple, tough enough and extremely well made re: workmanship and materials. They are great for high volume foot. I would not recommend them above timberline in the wet stuff and snow but they will do the job in most situations. Water resistance at this time is unknown. A imnor issue is the scree cuff is not snug enough for my use however, but the great sale price over rode the cuff issue. Lowa Scout has a better cuff. I hope The North Face doesn't screw up LaSportiva as it's my understanding NF just bought the company. Buy them!!!

These boots take a while to break in, but they are great when you finish. The full-lleather upper is very durable, and I have have found it completely waterproof even though there is no membrane. It is a little heavy, but all of it seems to be in support. This boot holds you up great and the traction is very good. The leather sticks to the sole very well even after getting wet many times, and the cushioning is good. I can't see any reason not to get this boot if the price works for you.
