rated 3.0 of 5 stars
photo: LifeStraw Peak Series Water Filter System water treatment product

Decent filter with a bad design.

Pros

  • Silicon bottle
  • Large capacity
  • Decent filter with ok flow rate
  • Comes with good back flush plunger
  • Can be used in gravity or straw mode
  • Good company mantra—"for every Lifestraw purchased a child in need receives safe water for an entire year"

Cons

  • Slower than dedicated filter
  • Filter inlet 3" from lid means 3" of water can't get filtered
  • Expensive
  • Can't screw onto clean bottle

I'm a little surprised that LifeStraw kept this design when the BeFree is so much better. The 1L bottle is great, the lid is great. I experienced no leaking and it's awesome to just fill, load in my chest pocket, and keep going. But the inlet for the filter is at the very end. So when you are down to the last 1/3 of its capacity you have to compress the top to get that out. And regardless of how I tried I could not get the last 1/2 cup out, without sucking hard or reconfiguring. You simply cannot get it above the inlet.

You can see how high the filter sits in the bottle
When full, the filter has a decent flow rate, comparable to a good (I had a bad and a good) Sawyer Mini, however; less than my preferred Hydroblu filter. And you can see the fibers when the filter is removed, so you should be able to tell when to backflush.

Decent flow rate in gravity mode

LifeStraw says the remaining water can be filtered by putting the filter on the outside of the bag and this does work, but may not be the preferred route to use this as the bag plus filter is an awkward setup. I was able to use straw mode and suck the bag onto itself and get most of the water out.

Sucking hard to get most of the water left behind
When screwing the filter to the outside of the bag, the cap won't reach the filter, so you end up with an unprotected filter. So this setup is odd.

Note that the last drop can't be filtered unless filter is on outside

In gravity mode a coupler would be needed to connect to a bottle

The threads on the filter will not screw onto a bottle. So in gravity mode, unlike my Hydroblu, you need a coupler. I used this for five days on Olympics North Coast Trail and it filtered like a champ, no clogging, good flow rate..

Overall it's just an odd device.  It works and did not impart any bad tastes to the water. It does have a plastic smell and some may associate that with taste. But, the Befree or HydraPak 42 mm Filter Cap are better designs and not much more money. I just can't recommend this filter setup when better alternatives exist.
