Lowe Alpine Alpamayo 50+15

rated 4.0 of 5 stars

The Alpamayo 50+15 has been discontinued. If you're looking for something new, check out the best weekend packs for 2024.

I started hiking in 1982 and climbed most major peaks in the Philippines. Over the years, I've had no fewer than 10 backpacks ranging from the early external frame to several internal frame brands and models. Though I haven't been active in the last three years, my camping gears seem to talk to me every time I open the closet to check something.

I bought my Cobalt Blue Alpamayo APS 55+15 in 1997 for roughly $150. I was told that it was one of the last batch cordura packs made in Ireland. A relatively heavier pack compared similar brands and models but the sturdy fabric has proven its worth in all the 5 years of regular heavy use.

In 2002, I bought a Sirocco I for my wife and a TNF Stamina 70 for myself from REI Oregon. I used the TNF in two minor climbs only to go back to my old reliable Alpamayo after several hip blisters and backaches — a total misfit, as they say.

Several years have passed with newer pack designs, material and suspension technology in the market - but personally, nothing can come close to my Alpamayo in terms of tailor-fit suspension system, old school material reliability and a classic profile that always get a second look from newbie hikers...one reason why I seldom put on my pack cover!

Now at 47, I'm trying to get back in shape and start hiking again with my good old Alpamayo!
