rated 5 of 5 stars

Down pants with sewn-through construction that make camp life comfy in winter . . . or any time it's cold. Not inexpensive, but you do get what you pay for.

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Non bulky
  • Skilled construction
  • Warm
  • Effectively sheds moisture

Cons

  • None

These were a game changer more than a decade ago when I upgraded from 200 weight fleece pants to these for sitting around camp in winter. They've worn very well, although I've only worn them in snowy environments. Freedom of movement is excellent and they're tailored nicely to fit close with no bagginess. Mine have no pockets, but do have a highly functional fly, meaning it's generously long and very accommodating for minimal exposure if one chooses.

Comes with a stuff sack but not with a 20oz Powerade bottle.

Montbell currently sells both men's and women's versions, in addition to a "Western" or "Asian" fit, with two models each: a "Light Down Pant" with no fly or pockets, 10d ripstop, and a weight of 6.8 oz (192g) and a "Superior Down Pant" with both fly and front pockets, 20d ripstop and a weight of 9.1 oz (258g).

The women's models weigh a bit less (all in size M). Asian fit pants have shorter inseams and slightly narrower waists. All are filled with 800 fp goose down.

Back when I purchased mine only one version was offered. It appears the overall design has not changed—sewn through, diamond grid construction, with an elasticized waist.

More than a decade of winter camping with these pants. I've not possessed any other down pant for comparison.
