MSR Alpine Utensils Spatula

rated 3.0 of 5 stars
photo: MSR Alpine Utensils Spatula utensil

Light and reliable, this folding spatula works well for flipping eggs and pancakes and can also be used to stir soups and fluids.

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Flip open action
  • Price
  • Plastic won't scratch teflon

Cons

  • Like its sister the folding spoon, could be a little stiffer

For reasons of weight and time, I tend to rule out eggs and pancakes on longer trips, but on leisurely weekenders it can be nice to cook up some fresh yellow-eyes or a batch of cakes. That's when I bring along the MSR folding spatula.

I've had it for at least five years now, and often just throw it in to a general purpose cooking kit when I'm not too worried about weight. I have the older version of the spatula, which uses a little click lock instead of the channel lock on the newer version.

The click lock failed on the companion spoon and I got the newer version, but in this case normal use doesn't stress the lock too much and it has held up well. The channel lock is somewhat better and should hold up equally well, but then you'll miss one of the silly but satisfying features of the spatula: you can flip it open and it will snap into locked position, ready to rock and roll.

When cooking a soup or anything that requires constant stirring, the spatula can work better than the spoo

Because it's plastic it won't scratch teflon-lined cookware.

The end of the spatula melted the first time I cooked with it. Bacon and eggs for two in a stainless steel frying pan, nothing extreme.

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Lightweight
  • Folding

Cons

  • The doggone thing shouldn’t melt at cooking temperature.
