Ozark Trail 17' X 11' Family Dome Tent

rated 1.0 of 5 stars

The 17' X 11' Family Dome Tent has been discontinued. If you're looking for something new, check out the best tents and shelters for 2024.

I purchased the Model HK-5100 17' x 11' Family Dome Tent from Wal-Mart, Panama City Beach, FL, and upon opening the case several things were found to be wrong.

First, the tent was noticeably filled with dirt and bird droppings, (which I had to clean prior to using). Next, the Fly Awning was damaged (torn edge seam), and the Tent Screens had holes in the screening.

I would have returned this item, but since I was already 50 miles away from the Wal-Mart I purchased this item from and the NOTICE to contact you, HKD Global, Ltd. Concerning Missing and/or Broken Parts.

I purchased this item to replace a 15 year old OZARK TRAIL tent I had. I like the tent design and the ease at which it can be assembled, but I need to have the Fly Awning replaced and repair the screens, but I should not have to.

Quality products are getting harder to find even with products from manufacturers of products owned for many years, not to mention products you grow to trust only now are falling way to poor standards. Seems the QA/QC Procedures/Processes need to be reviewed.

We had this tent for 6-7 months, because I bought for a Christmas present for my husband and we didn't have a chance to use it until this summer, obviously.

Unfortunately, the first time we get to use it, it LEAKS...we had rain coming in both the side windows, it was literally seeping through the entire window flap, not the seams. We had never had this tent up before and only used it for less than 24 hrs when it started raining. Much to our dismay, because we no longer had the receipt and because I purchased it several months ago, Wal-mart will not return it for us.

Now we are stuck with a tent that leaks! I wouldn't recommend this tent. We didn't have any trouble setting it up, however, the zipper on the door is a design flaw...it doesn't zip closed if you go up further than half way.

The shoe holders also leaked. They would be a nice feature if it didn't leak. The size was nice and I could stand up in it (I'm 5'10) but who wants to be in a soaking wet tent.

Sleeps: 6+
Ease of Setup: easy with 2 people

This tent did very well with four people sleeping in it. It was last year October 2007, my wife and I went to a Nascar race in Martinsville, Virginia, with my sister-in-law and brother and we had a great time with this tent.

The only thing we found not so satisfactory about the tent was that we were in a field camping where there was heavy undergrass that was pretty thick and we got some holes poked in the bottom of the tent, but we could have avoided that by putting down a tarp before we set it up. Either way the tent did very well, kept us dry as it did rain overnight, but all four of us woke up dry and cozy.

I would recommend this tent now because it is actually on sale at Walmart and it was two years ago when we bought it.

This was a last minute purchase when we realized that we forgot to pack our tent this July. I bought it at Wal-Mart and the first time it was set up the cover over the top ripped at the seams. A lot of first time campers will make the mistake of pulling the top too tight and it will tear but my family and I camp almost every weekend. We have had a Hillard Tent for the past 4 years and didn't have any trouble with it. This tent is now my child's play place because we can't use it camping if it rains or its windy the top would either blow off or leak!!!!

Used for camping, have had no problems.

Pros

  • I have this tent for years with no problems except the pole broke and I can't find the replacement parts.

Cons

  • The tent poles, I can't seem to find replacements.

I have had no problems when camping. It was very roomy for 2 people . Ive had the tent for 6 years and no problems except when taking the pole out we broke 2 of them and are having a hard time replacing them. If any one has any help would appreciate it.

This tent has no structural integrity whatsoever. Most tents I have used in the past have poles that cross at the high point of the tent, this is not so for the 17' by 11' Family Dome. Its poles are parallel, which makes it very easy for the slightest breeze to blow it over. This tent's only function would be to cover up something uglier than the tent itself, if you could find such a thing.

First night we put the tent up, it rained and all of the seams leaked. After a couple days the whole tent was saturated. After 30 days, the zipper would not work right. It kept splitting after you zipped it up.

This is a makeshift home for us until we can find a place. It's nice having a leaky "house" for a month. I just can't wait to see what the next month will bring.

Ease of Setup: easy
Weight: don't know

We set the tent on Friday night. It had a hard time with the wind. Everyone else's tent had NO problem.

When we took it down Saturday morning we found that one of the main tent poles had slit down the middle. Now to use it we will have to order new parts after one night.

Not a good buy if you have to buy new poles every time you use it.
