Ozark Trail backpacking tent/sunshade

rated 2.0 of 5 stars

The backpacking tent/sunshade has been discontinued. If you're looking for something new, check out the best tents and shelters for 2024.

This is a typical Walmart type tent. It is very simple. A square, about 6' x 6', with X-arrange fiberglass poles. You set up the fly first and it forms a sun shade, then you hook in the tent underneath. The material is the polyester tafetta, the construction is only average. I'd say it's a pretty good value.

I set up the tent by myself in a few minutes. It's pretty easy. There are all hooks, that you hook into the poles, so it is quick, but not the most secure. You could probably do it in the dark, if you had to.

The tent claims to hold 2-3 but can only hold 2. I find that I can't extend my legs all the way without stretching the fabric and warping the tent. The ventilation is OK, with a mesh window in the back and on the door.

Water resistance is lousy. The fly doesn't cover enough of the tent, and water WILL leak in if it is more than a light drizzle. Touch the side of the tent and water droplets will immediately fall through. The bottom of then tent is an awfully loud and cheap poly material. It isn't very strong, but it is stiff and waterproof.

In strong winds the tent will flop around because of its basic design. The fiberglass poles may eventually break. They are not very strong, like aluminum is. The hooks that hold the tent down will come out.

Overall, this tent is not worth it if rain is involved. It would be good for summer camping in the sun shade mode, or backyard camping for the kids, but I don't know if I would risk it for backpacking. It is not very heavy, and not poorly constructed, but it just isn't sturdy or waterproof. Spend a little more money and get a better tent.
