Patagonia Men's Guide Jacket

rated 3.5 of 5 stars
photo: Patagonia Men's Guide Jacket soft shell jacket

It's a great jacket for medium output hikes and climbs; not very warm for casual wear. If you will use it for being active, I would recommend this jacket, but not for around town. Durable, strong jacket.

Pros

  • Durable
  • Moves well
  • Hook and Loop wrist adjustments are quick and durable

Cons

  • High collar. Can have a cooling effect on cold days if innactive.

I bought this jacket based on online reviews. It's a good jacket, relatively breathable, simple and tough. It's water resistant, but take a shell if you'll be in more than a drizzle for very long; handles snow fine. Sleeves are a little longer, which is great for reaching and leaning without getting too exposed. I've mountain biked and gone running in this jacket, taken it to the mountains and worn it around town.

I'm 5'10" 165lbs and I bought the large. It was a little big but it was a little tight in the medium; even in the large, layering was a little challenging beyond a Capilene. I tried wearing my R-1 Pullover under it, but it limited movement and the jacket seemed to pull on the R-1. It just didn't fit well under the jacket.

I found that the jacket made me cold in the shoulders and back when I wore it on medium, cool days if I wasn't active. It has a thin fleece liner but it isn't for insulating as much as wicking.

I bought the Guide thinking I would climb in it but I don't end up going out on rainy days. I would still recommend it, but to people who need that kind of jacket.
