I like wine!! A lot. And have no qualms about taking it on short backpacking trips.

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Sturdy
  • No plastic taste
  • Seals tight
  • No corkscrew required

I must confess, that one of my favorite parts of overnight trips is "happy hour." And a nice glass of wine to accompany your Packit Gourmet or Good To-Go dinner, is a nice luxury. On short trips (2-4 days), I have no problem hauling a bit of the grape with me.

But schlepping a real bottle of wine has issues for backpackers. Even empty, the glass bottle is heavy. And there's always the possibility that the bottle could break somehow. And then there's the corkscrew issue. Fortunately, Platypus has come up with an ingenious product to keep your wine safe and fresh, the PlatyPreserve.

Taking design hints from the Platypus line of water bladders, this collapsible bottle is super light weight, sturdy, and easy to use. It will hold a full 750 ml bottle of your favorite vintage, and there is even a gauge on the back, showing when you've gotten to about the halfway point, so you are less likely (ha!) to drink an entire bottle in one sitting.

There are also spots to write information about the contents of your PlatyPreserve with a dry erase marker, should you want to do that. I've never used that feature, because I ALWAYS know what wine I am drinking.

One of the problems in travelling with wine, is keeping air out of it between tasting sessions. The design of the PlatyPreserve makes it easy to squeeze extra air out, and then sealing with the screw on cap. Problem solved!

I have had this for years, and it has lasted much longer than I though it might. I have used it on many short overnight trips through the Sierra, Foothills, Cascades, and Coast ranges, and enjoyed many a happy hour. If you like your wine, this is a great way to take it on the trail!

Background

I have this for ten years, and used it on trips all over the West. Never used anything else for this, as it works great, and I've never thought I needed anything different.

Durable and a must-have for various adventures/venues.

Pros

  • Great practical design
  • Durable rugged material
  • Leak-proof cap
  • Fits into a large jacket pocket

Cons

  • None

I have used this product for over 10+ years. I primarily use it for day hikes, picnics, in movie theaters, and indoor/outdoor concerts. I have also used it backpacking to celebrate seven successful summits of Mt. Whitney at Trail Camp.

To get through concert jacket/bag searches “a friend of mine” says it conveniently fits within the “personal package” area of one’s underwear without drawing attention. His wife says there are also “female” areas that allow concealment without fear of detection by security. Also, no security person is going to ever get close to such regions with their hands. Nothing worse than going to an event and paying a ridiculous price for terrible box wine.

I have one bottle labeled for white wine and another for red to prevent cross contamination.

Background

Numerous times a year for over 10+ years.
