Rab Filament Beanie
The Rab Filament Beanie is a legit lightweight fleece beanie for cool days or high output activities on cold days. It's not bulky or thick, but it provides adequate warmth and dries quickly.
Pros
- Warm for the weight
- Dries quickly
- Comfortable
- Packs down small
- Wicks sweat
Cons
- Won't win beauty awards!
I don't like beanies or stocking caps that are too warm when I'm out and about in cool or cold weather. I have beanies that are good for daily wear in cold weather—like driving to and from work or just getting around in the cold. But when I hike or run in cool or cold weather, I want a beanie that is made for active wear. The Rab Filament beanie is just what I was looking for. It's lightweight, not bulky, and comfortable. But it breathes enough on walks, runs, or hikes so I don't overheat in it.

The Filament beanie is one size fits most. It's quite stretchy so it should indeed fit most heads. I have an average noggin and it fits me just fine. It's tight, but not compression-like tight. The fleece is soft so it's comfortable and doesn't get annoying to wear.

Granted, the Filament beanie won't win any beauty awards. I don't think it looks great when I wear it. But it sure functions well! I've worn it outside on 35-degree days and on 20-degree days and temps between. It performs well in that weather. Granted, if I'm standing still and it's windy I'd want a thicker beanie. But for activities in 20+ degree weather on days when it's not too windy, I'll grab the Filament beanie.

The Filament beanie has stripes of low and high fleece on the inside. I really like that feature and it seems to help the beanie breathe but also provide warmth.
(Note: it blocks a little wind, but not much.)

The "Rab" logo is nicely embroidered.
I'll be using this beanie on hikes when it's cool or cold. I'll also use it on longer runs during the shoulder season. I haven't taken it on any long jogs yet, but I can easily see me throwing it in my pocket for long jogs on cool days. It's so light and minimalistic I won't think twice about cramming it into a pocket just in case.

I'll also throw the Filament beanie in my backpack for multi-day hikes when the weather could be cool. For example, if I had this when I hiked the Sierras the last few summers I would have put it in my pack and worn it around the tent at night and maybe even when I was sleeping. Again, it's so small and light (0.6 ounces) that I will take it on many future hikes. It's already on my packing list for the Wonderland Trail next year!
