As an avid backpacker, I'm always on the lookout for high quality, high calorie food that is easy to pack and eat on trail. I recommend Greenbelly Meal Bars and have reviewed them here. But there's another similar and even smaller alternative: Range Meal Bars. Range Meal Bars are made from all natural ingredients and have 700 calories in each bar. They don't weigh much and they don't take up much space in your food bag or bear vault.
They are about the size of two decks of cards, give or take. They are pretty dense, but they are not hard or overly chewy. I like the texture of these bars and do enjoy eating them. They sit well with me and go down easy with some water, coffee, or electrolytes.

Range Bars come in a few flavors: Mint Chocolate Chip, Chocolate/Peanut Butter/Coffee, and Molasses/Ginger/Sea Salt. I like all the flavors and usually take an assortment when I go out. Although I haven't taken them on any desert trips, they haven't melted at all on my treks through the Sierras, Maroon Bells, Boundary Waters, North Country Trail, etc. I'm guessing they would get a bit soft in wamer weather, but they've been fine for me in temps under 80 degrees.

I don't have any critiques of the Range Meal bars. I really like them, and my wife and teenage sons do as well. Sometimes on longer hiking days I wish the bar was bigger, so maybe it would be nice if there was a 1000 or 1200 calorie Range Meal bar. But most times 700 calories is fine for a meal as long as I have something else with it.

Finally, Range Meal bars are under $7 each if you buy them in packs of six. You can find them on the Range Meal Bar website, on Amazon, and other online stores like Garage Grown Gear. I believe the shelf life is around one year, so I only buy what I need for the next few months.
My recommendation: Give them a shot! I never go on long hikes without a few Range Bars.
