In 1973, This Was A Shelter To Have For Serious Winter Camping. I Acquired Mine New ...

Pros

  • This shelter stood up to high wind blizzard conditions for three days on end. It really saved my life ....

Cons

  • A heavy tent by today's standards.I think it weighed in at the 5-6 pound range.

This two-man tent saved four men from freezing to death caught in a three-day winter storm in the Wallowa mountains in February of 1974.The other two hikers' tent failed the first night of storms so we made room for everyone in the Crestline. This tent had a large ventilated cooking area within the shelter's vestibule.

I cannot say much more of the details of this tent. It's been long ago now. Wish I still had it.

I owned one. For the time, a great tent.

Pros

  • Solid, lots of features, used in the Himalayas at that time. (Not mine. REI was an expedition sponsor.)

Cons

  • Heavy. Odd tricks to set up tightly.

It required little tricks to set it up properly. I got rid of mine in the past 2 years.  It weighed—stakes, poles, and al— around 10 pounds. I bought it new but can’t recall the price. I did use it in a snowstorm and it was solid. The frame was solid A-frame of shock-corded aluminum that was about 5/8” diameter. Not flexible.

My wife and I dated in this tent, took her first backpacking trips using it including a week in the Wind Rivers before the range turned into a zoo. It was ten years or more before I replaced it.

Background

MANY backpacking trips all over the West. Some car camping.

Price Paid: Maybe $220

This is an older tent but still performs well. Non dome tent. But solid.

Pros

  • A real bombshelter of a 4 season tent. I bought mine new from REI for 127.00 and I just used it this last weekend.

Cons

  • Needs multiple tent stakes or tie offs.

Kind of takes a while to set up. Rainfly is solid

Background

Done some winter camping just below timberline. Summer monsoons in the pecos mountains. Tent has always been sturdy.
