REI Powderbound Midweight Snow Socks
Warm, comfortable winter socks that worked well for cold weather hiking and snow conditions. The midweight cushioning provides good warmth without being overly bulky in hiking boots. They stayed comfortable during longer days outside and handled wet winter trail conditions well. A solid option for winter hiking, snowshoeing, or cold weather backpacking.
Pros
- Warm without being overly bulky
- Comfortable cushioning for long days in boots
- Good fit that stays in place
- Handled cold and damp winter conditions well
Cons
- A little thicker than standard hiking socks
- May be too warm for mild winter conditions
I picked these up for winter hiking and general cold weather use. Most of my hiking is in Western Washington where winter trails are often cold, wet, and muddy, so having warm socks that still work well inside hiking boots is important.
These socks struck a good balance between warmth and comfort. The midweight cushioning adds noticeable warmth without making my boots feel overly tight. They stayed comfortable throughout longer hikes and didn’t bunch or slide down while moving.
They also handled damp conditions well, which is pretty common in the Pacific Northwest. My feet stayed warm even when the trails were wet or muddy. The thickness is noticeable compared to lighter hiking socks, but that’s expected for something designed for colder weather.
Overall they’ve been a good winter sock for hiking and I’ll continue using them for cold weather trips.
Background
I regularly hike and backpack and spend a lot of time on trails in Western Washington where conditions are often wet and cold. I’ve used a variety of hiking socks over the years and tend to look for socks that balance warmth, comfort, and durability for longer days on the trail.
