A ground mat may not be the first piece of gear that comes to mind in outdoor product conversations. However, over the course of testing the Overland Mat for approximately four months, many uses could be found. Not only can this insulated mat be used as a blanket, but the mat can also function as a vapor barrier under a tent. In fact, Rumpl sates: "Yes, you can use our mats under a tent!" as a footprint. At approximately 4' x 6', this mat could be used under many tents for car camping.

Designed as both a ground barrier and a blanket, short of extremely muddy conditions, the Overland ground mat is a good candidate for many applications from the trailhead to the campsite to the beach to festivals and more.

Design and Features

The top material of the Overland Mat is comfortable, and soft to the touch. Although tough on the ground, this mat would perform well as a warm insulating blanket. With 180 g/m2 of insulation, the padding is enough to protect bare feet, such as while doing post-hike yoga, while still being thin enough to be packable.

The Overland Mat's reinforced corner loops are sewn well and would function very well for staking the mat or lashing i.e. into a hammock.

Rumpl includes a storage bag that is water resistant and made of the same durable 500D bottom material. Although the mat can be stuffed into the bag, it is substantially easier to pack and zip closed when folded.

Rumpl also offers another ground mat, the Everywhere Mat, as an uninsulated version for people looking for a lighter (1.2 lbs versus 3.85 lbs) and slightly less rugged model. The Everywhere Mat comes in two sizes: Full (52" x 75"), same as the Overland, and Mini (38" x 52"). Currently the Overland Mat is not available in a Mini size.

Multi-Use

Rumpl designed the Overland Mat for "overlanding, car camping, basecamp, and beyond" and "to cover everything from rocky beaches to overland expeditions to powder days."

I've used the Overland Mat almost daily for approximately four months. Home to van use, festivals, parties, pre- and post-hike trailhead prep, post-hike yoga—this ground mat/blanket has had nearly constant use, including from my dogs.

It is as versatile as it is durable. The Overland Mat came in very handy during a hot summer festival day. Needing an insulation layer that also happened to be waterproof, the mat easily took on the occupation of keeping iced kegs protected from the heat and sunshine. Although substantial time is required for proper drying, the Overland Mat dries out in hours, rather than days.

Durability and Care:

Little to no wear is evident after approximately four months of use/testing. The Overland Mat has withstood days of van utility use, hundred-plus pound dog claws, and trailhead prep/post hikes on dirt, asphalt, and rocky settings. Although never tested in winter, this should be a functional mat in snowy wet conditions due to its durable and waterproof design.

While the Overland Mat is listed as not being machine washable, it has so far had little to no staining and cleaned up very easily. Rumpl states to "Shake off your Overland Mat and spray or spot-clean with a wet washcloth. Hang to dry. Do not put in the dryer, machine wash, bleach, iron, or dry clean your Overland Mat."

After days on end of drool and dander, spot cleaning the Overland Mat  performed extremely well due to the PSAF DWR treatment. Shaking the mat after outdoor use easily removes most debris, sand, and dirt.

The Overland Mat is a versatile, durable, padded, waterproof ground mat and blanket. I've used it almost daily for the past four months. From home to van use, festivals, parties, pre- and post-hike trailhead prep, to post-hike yoga, this piece of gear has had nearly constant use. For dog owners, cross-country road trippers, car campers, hikers, beachgoers and more, it is a true everyday-use piece of gear.

Many thanks to the people at Rumpl for the opportunity to test the Overland Mat for the Trailspace Gear Review Corps.
