I bought some Stowaway a while ago and just recently the weekend before last finally tried the Thai Curry with Shrimp.

Pros

  • Tasty
  • Great texture

Cons

  • Cost

I am amazed at what this company does with freeze-dried / dehydrated food.   I do not know how it is possible to make shrimp taste good after such a process.  The shrimp doesnt have the same texture any more but its good enough for what it is.  Over all the taste of it and the texture is excellent.  So much so that if it wasnt for the cost, I might go out of my way to eat it while not backpacking.  But there is the cost aspect in the end.

If you want a great tasting meal backpacking, you simply cant go wrong with this if you like regular shrimp and curry.  I guess they charge what they have to.  You just really need to want Thai Shrimp ad Curry while backpacking to pay this type of price.

Background

I have eaten many types of foods in various states while backpacking. This is the best type of food of its kind I have found.

Restaurant-level of quality and flavor. Easily a top three meal...definitely a contender for my favorite freeze-dried meal.

Pros

  • flavorful
  • perfect consistency

Cons

  • expensive

This meal compares favorably with any given curry dish from a middle- to middle-high-end restaurant. Good, spicy curry blend, but not so strong as to completely overwhelm the flavor of coconut in the sauce base.

Nice, big, flavorful chunks of identifiable vegetables. Fully rehydrated rice. And the shrimp. Oh, the shrimp. Big, succulent, perfectly rehydrated shrimp.

Between this and Stowaway's Wild Boar Bacon Bean Stew....I wish I was rich. :)  I would buy these two meals to eat at home on a regular basis.

Background

Over 40 years of backpacking, car camping, and hiking have only increased my appetite for good, easy meals.
