Eureka! Rainier

Eureka! Rainier—the perfect trail companion! Everyone has covered this tent very clearly in reviews, all to my agreement. I just want to add that mine was purchased somewhere around 1992! Yes, from Dick's or perhaps the chain they bought out in the late nineties. Anyway, I broke it out this afternoon in preparation for Patagonia, always waiting for it to crumble out of the bag. NOPE, still well intact, very pliable, and pops right up into place! It's been with me to the big parks (Yosemite, Yellowstone,… Full review

Hammock Gear Premium Incubator 20°

Bigger in size with a finer down than its ECO version, Hammock Gear’s Premium Incubator 20 is one of the best full-price gear purchases I have ever made. Once again the cottage industry proves its superiority to shelved items at REI. I suffer from a hiking condition known as CBS (Cheap B@st@rd Syndrome). If you look over my gear reviews you will see loads of sentences like, “I bought this on clearance,” or “It was on sale.” And I often steer clear of name-brand stuff, unless I pick it… Full review

Kelty Gunnison 2

Disappointed in zipper quality. I purchased a Kelty Gunnison 2 around late October 2019 and was very excited about setting it up. The awning and the three-season build were the selling points for me. The tent has withstood the AZ desert weather and 68 mph wind gusts. However, by the end of Jan 2020, the front zipper began splitting. I was able to fix it to where both zippers were functional, or so I thought. As of Feb 2, 2020, the bottom zipper continues to split and I can only use the top zipper… Full review

TiTo 6 mm Titanium Tent Pegs

Extremely strong 6x145/165 mm titanium pegs for pitching on rocky, compacted, or frozen ground. Such pegs are successfully hammered into ground, which would otherwise damage any aluminum stake. Since 2016 I've owned several tunnel tents, which require four stable pegs for successful pitching: Hilleberg Kaitum 3, Nallo 3 and Fjallraven Abisko Lite 3 (all reviewed by me). Quite often the stock DAC J-stakes don't work well, namely on rocky, compacted or frozen ground. Hammering the peg in such conditions… Full review

L.L.Bean Microlight FS 2

Lightweight—at a cost. If you look at my profile, you’ll see that my three reviews prior to this one have all been 5 stars. You might assume that I lack objectivity in reviewing the things that I purchase. Well, in my old age I’ve learned to research more carefully than I had in the past.  I thought I’d done my diligence before purchasing this L.L. Bean Microlight FS 2 tent. I liked that it was very versatile in the various configurations for ventilating the tent. One could spend comfortable… Full review

Hilleberg Anjan 2

TENT DESIGN UPDATED IN 2017 Tough weather protection for a three-season tent. I ordered and received my Hilleberg Anjan 2 in early 2018, to complete the last half of my bicycle tour from Phoenix back to Wisconsin. The tent was redesigned in 2017 I believe, to address the rain protection issues that were described in the previous review. The corners of the outer tent now extend to the ground, while still offering ventilation all the way round via catenary design. I ordered the tent to give my Hilleberg… Full review

The North Face VE 24

These older NF VE tents are brutal beasts. The newer models, as I have reconditioned two, are not made with the same quality. Just picked up a smelly VE24 today. No poles, but I have plenty of parts poles to make a set. Needs some patching to the pole sleeves, some floor sealer, and she's ready for another 10 years. I have the first of the original VE25's and it's my go-to tent 85 percent of the time when I motorcycle or winter camp. Can't stand up in it, but plenty of headroom for sitting in a… Full review

Hilleberg Nallo 3

The Nallo 3 is a well suitable tent for weight-conscious trips in severe conditions, offering comfort, weather resistance, and durability in a reasonably lightweight package. It's probably the best “compact” tent for my personal tasks. But the best tent isn’t good enough—I cannot get to become friends with its entrance. Also the living space is rather limited for three occupants. Background Me, my wife and son (he’s almost 5 at the moment of me writing this) enjoy year-round backcountry… Full review

Northwest Territory Family Cabin 8-Person Tent 14' x 14'

Nice picture on package, but poor quality on materials and craftsmanship. Metal clips that hold tent to poles break easily. Not worthy of your time or money. Full review
