The North Face Steep Tech Jacket

The Steep Tech Jacket has been discontinued. If you're looking for something new, check out the best waterproof jackets for 2024.

I was just recently on a backpacking trip around Mt. Washington. IF you know anything about the area you know that it has the worst weather in the world. While I was on my trip I found out why.

It was a real sunny day and it was about 30 degrees and within 20 minutes a storm had moved in on us. We were on the summit of the mountain. The wind picked up and the temp dropped about 30 degrees. And to top it all of it was snowing harder then I had ever seen in my life. I was lucky because I had my TNF Steeptech coat and pants on and they preformed so well out there. I was out for a total of 8 days and brought it every where.

I don't recommend this coat or pants if you're not into serious winter hiking or backcountry skiing. If you are it would be the best investment you could make.

Price Paid: $500 for coat, $300 for pants

Yellow, gray and black. Scot Schmidt design. No doubt, this is the best jacket I have ever owned. I have used it heavily for the past five years -- for wear and tear, it is bulletproof. I would give it five stars except that it is a tad heavy, and the yellow does have a tendency to get dirty quickly -- dumping it in the wash makes it look brand new. For downhill skiing, this is one great jacket. If I could afford it, I would buy a new red one, without hesitation.

Fabric: Nylon
Price Paid: $250

The jacket is very warm and comfortable. It is great for skiing. My only problem is it would be nice to have pockets for hands. It has great ventilation through the sides and back. Plenty of places to store stuff in the pockets inside and outside. I have had no problems with leaking, color fade, or anything for that matter. It looks the same as when I bought it two years ago.

Fabric: Ultrex
Price Paid: $395

I had to send my jacket into North Face for replacement due to leaking. North Face do not put the warranty on Ultrex like they do on their Gore Tex products.

Fabric: Ultrex
Price Paid: $421

The most awsome jacket to own.

Waterproof zippers and lots of velcro.

Fabric: Ultrex by burlington
Price Paid: $550
