The Altra Lone Peaks are some of the most comfortable hiking shoes I’ve ever worn. I used them for a section hike on the Appalachian Trail and they handled everything from rocky climbs to muddy stretches without issue. They’re lightweight, dry quickly, and are perfect for anyone who values comfort and natural foot movement over heavy boots.
Pros
- Wide toe box keeps feet comfortable on long days
- Lightweight and breathable
- Drains and dries quickly after rain or stream crossings
- Great traction on mixed terrain
Cons
- Cushioning flattens out faster than heavier boots
- Not much ankle support if you carry a very heavy pack
- Soles wear quicker than traditional boots
I hiked about 80 miles of the AT last spring in a pair of Lone Peaks and they impressed me. Coming from heavier leather boots, the weight difference alone was a game changer. The zero-drop platform took a little getting used to, but once I adjusted, the stride felt more natural and less fatiguing. The wide toe box was a lifesaver on hot days when my feet swelled, and I finished my section with no blisters.
They handled wet weather surprisingly well—after a full day of rain my feet weren’t bone dry, but the shoes dried out overnight much faster than boots would have. The grip was solid on rocks and roots, though I wouldn’t push them too far into winter or snow.
After my trip, the midsoles did feel a bit compressed, so I don’t expect them to last as long as heavy-duty boots. Still, for thru-hikers or section hikers, that tradeoff is worth it.
Background
I’ve used heavier boots (Merrells and Salomons) for years, but this was my first extended trip in Altras. Bought the Lone Peaks from REI before my AT section hike.

Amazing trail shoes! Excellent for trail and road running. Hold up well in light to intense rain, dry quickly, and are comfortable from the start! Excellent for novices to advance runners!
Pros
- Minimal heel drop
- Wide toe box
- Comfortable from the first wear
- Quick drying
Cons
- The mesh can tear if you get caught on trail debris
These trail running shoes are amazing! Extra wide toe box provides room for comfort, but doesn't let your foot slip and slide inside. Their comfortable shoes with minimal heel drop, allowing for a natural fit and wear during your runs. I use them on trail, and rarely on road, but suit both terrains well.
These shoes do not need to be broken in. They are amazing from the start, comfort fit. The support is exceptional—you don't really notice you are in minimal drop shoes. I would recommend these to any expert runner or even novice looking to transition to flatter shoes with zero drop.
These shoes are quick drying too. The mesh has the ability to tear but I only noticed little tears in the upper mesh after some heavy hard runs in the rain/mud/trail debris (tree stumps, sticks, etc.) I had been pretty rough with them and they only sustained minor tears.
