Columbia Mont Verde Jacket
The Mont Verde Jacket has been discontinued. If you're looking for something new, check out the best waterproof jackets for 2024.
I had looked at many jackets, and having previous Columbias, took the chance. This is an excellent wind/rain jacket. I have worn it in downpours, snowstorms, and heavy winds, with and without a backpack, and I have never been sorry I purchased it.
It has chest and pit zip ventilation, which are as good as any I have seen on other brands. The chest ventilation pockets are placed so that they can be operated even when wearing a backpack, without interference from the straps. Add a titanium fleece liner and it is a great winter coat. The hood is attached, and has a three way adjustment system, and a bill on the hood. The hood is a little stiff, and when left a little loose, does not move with your head well. I rate this parka as good as any. I have never been cold or wet in it, and that is what counts most. Thanks, Columbia.

I purchased this jacket this summer through Campmor mail order. Though I like the features of the jacket, it tore on the first camping trip I went on. The stress of swinging a backpack on caused a small tear on the upper arm. I tried to go back to Columbia, but they said because it didn't rip at a seam, they wouldn't warranty it. I guess you get what you pay for.
