EMS Expedition Parka

rated 4.5 of 5 stars

The Expedition Parka has been discontinued. If you're looking for something new, check out the best waterproof jackets for 2024.

For anyone who is looking for a 3-Layer Climbing shell, Check out the EMS 3-layer for 1999. this jacket, with the possible exception of the cuffs, is a damn fine climbing shell. Especially pleasing to anyone who is shopping around and knows some prices, $260 is CHEAP, when you compare to a TNF Kichatna for $400, or a Marmot climbing jacket for the same $. If a little bare bones doesn't bother you, (which if you're any kind of real climber, it shouldn't), check out the newest offering from EMS. it's simple, but for stormproof-ness, it's as good as anything I've worn, and that's just about all that matters in my book.

Fabric: 3 Layer Gore-Tex

I'm very happy with this shell. I use it sailing, kayaking, and as a rain jacket in the city. It's kept me dry in driving rain (25-30kts), with a well-designed hood that even kept my glasses dry! The short waist allows me to wear it for intermediate conditions while kayaking. The seven pockets are handy. The pit zips offer good ventilation (and are double-flapped), and opening the chest pockets can provide a little more. Note that the hood is completely removeable, but there's no neat way to keep it on without wearing it. I'm completely satisfied.

Fabric: GoreTex 2-layer

I've worn this jacket skiing and on a couple of trips to the Presidential Mts in New Hampshire. On Mt Washington it performed great. My only gripe is that it has a few too many bells and whistles that get in the way of its performance. EMS is very good about repairs though, so I can't complain. Look for end of season sales. I got this jacket for $199 in Dec of '94. Tough price to beat in comparison to TNF or Marmot jackets....

Awesome jacket!!! Well designed and no nonsense. Drawcords are a little tricky with heavy mitts bu't its not that bad. Great for ice climbing and winter mountaineering. I also have the expedition bibs which are even better. A++
