Cons

  • Price

I am going to end up sounding like a promoter of these bags/quilts. I have had many sleeping bags over my lifetime. Synthetic and down, eventually settling on down as the go-to for all my trips.

I am going to talk about this quilt in terms of price mainly because I think this is the major sticking point for most; I know it was for me. I am doing this because in terms of quality and build I do not think you can get better than Enlightened Equipment. I've bought bags from the best high output manufactures and their quality is easily on par with them. So really the only question is why you would spend this much when there are less expensive options out there?

This is what I got with the quilt I purchased. I now have a bag that fits me better than any other I have ever owned. I ordered the extra-wide because this dimension has always been the biggest hurdle to overcome when looking at bags for me. My last bag from another manufacturer that does not convert to a quilt is not the most comfortable. While I got the long and wide version it still hugs my shoulders when zipped all the way up.

Getting back to my EE convert quilt, I ordered the highest quality down I have even seen offered for a sleeping bag/quilt, 950 fill.  It is rated at 20 degrees and I have tested it to that temperature. Everyone sleeps differently, and what is warm to me may be cold to others. It passed with flying colors for me though. The cherry on top is that this bag fully unzips into a quilt when you want and all of this for a bag that weighs just an ounce over 2 pounds.

Negatives? Sometimes the zipper gets stuck, but I’ve never had a bag in recent memory where this doesn’t happen.

If you have difficultly in finding a bag that fits you well you need this. It is very much worth it in my opinion. If normal bags fit you, maybe you do not need this unless you like quilts, in which case I do not know of anyone that is selling quilts for substantially less without serious compromises in materials or weight.

4/2024 -  I wanted to add what I overlooked in the original review.  The nature of this convert bag is that it does not have a hood.  While I ordered mine with a draft collar that works in an excellent fashion, the bag does not have a hood.  Therefore if sleeping in cold temperatures you will need to plan on having something warm for your head.   I have not found this to be an issue myself and honestly I like this setup better.  I feel like I have a better sense on what is happening around me without having my head stuck in a hood that is part of the bag. I did not plan on this being a positive, its just something I found out over time through use.

Background

I have used many many different bags over the years from synthetic to down in all conditions.
