Midnight nature calls without getting out of the bag!

Pros

  • Feathered Friends = quality bag
  • Can be worn like a down parka

Cons

  • None

I love this bag. It's rated at 25 degrees. As a standalone bag it is comfortable down to about 32°. It has 18.4 oz of 850+ goose down. If the temps drop below freezing I start to feel cold spots at the zippered arm holes.  I think that is to be expected.

But those zippered arm holes are one of the nice features of this specialty bag. On a midnight nature call one can from inside the bag, unzip the arm holes, extend the arms, release the drawstring closure at the foot, pull the bag up like a dress, walk around camp, water the bushes, return to bed, cinch up the bottom, pull arms back inside, zip up, and be back asleep, all without ever getting out of the bag.

It's nice not to have to start rewarming the bag from scratch. It's also nice to carry some of that warmth with you while out doing your business.

I'm primarily a hammock camper. One of my favorite winter tricks is to use this bag in combination with a top quilt and bottom quilt. I have stayed toasty warm down into single digits while using this bag along with a 20° top quilt. The combined loft is impressive!

This combo is extremely versatile. In variable temps I may use the Winter Wren alone, the top quilt alone, or both with synergistic effect.

Some people might be tempted to wear the bag like a parka while lounging around camp. I personally don't do that, but only because I don't want to burn holes in the bag from an ember popping out of the fire.

There are two ways to enter/exit the bag. The main zipper is top center instead of on the side like a traditional bag.  You can lay on top of bag, pull legs up, tuck them into bag, and zip. The other method would be to put the bag on like a dress while standing up. Uncinch the drawstring foot, step into the bag, pull hood up over your head, extend arms through zippered arm holes, zip up the main zipper, get into hammock, cinch up the foot, pull arms back inside.

The bag compresses nicely and lofts up quickly. Feathered Friends uses the highest quality down in their bags.  Materials and craftsmanship are of typical Feathered Friends excellence.

I don't seem to have any pictures of the bag currently, but I will take some and edit this review when I get back home.
