ioMerino Ultra Tee

photo: ioMerino Ultra Tee short sleeve performance top

The Ultra Tee is a comfortable Merino wool T-shirt that’s great for hiking, running and global travel. I’ve been travelling for the last 18 months and the Ultra Tee has been a great shirt for working out on the road.

Pros

  • Doesn’t hold the stink in
  • Very comfortable
  • Dries quickly

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Not as durable as synthetic shirts

LRG_DSC00604.jpgMy Usage

Having minimal gear with me whilst travelling makes life so much easier. I like to try and stay healthy on the road and exercise regularly so I pack running shorts, my Altra Escalantes, and the Ultra Tee as my workout clothes. I throw on the Ultra Tee every couple of days and go for a run or hit the gym if I’m lucky enough to find one. Moving around regularly often means I throw the shirt in my backpack and forget about it until the next time I need it. This is not something I could do with a synthetic shirt, I’m a sweaty dude and a synthetic shirt would stink after one use.

The Ultra Tee is available in five different colours, the colour seen here is called “dazzling blue”. I’m a part of IO Merino’s ambassador program titled “The Outsiders”, hence the text on the shirt. The base model has no text and just subtle branding and logos, all printed with reflective material to stay visible at night.

Material

IO Merino has blended Merino Wool (83%), Nylon (12%), and Elastane (5%) to maximum all the benefits of Merino wool with the added durability of nylon and the stretch of elastane. I’ve found the material to be very soft and comfortable to the skin. Merino wool is my go-to fabric for active pursuits because it doesn’t stink after one use like some synthetic materials.

Breathability

When running in hot, humid countries I’ve found the shirt to breathe well despite becoming saturated with sweat. Once the run’s over the shirt dries fast, if not quite as quickly as synthetics.

Sizing, Fit, and Comfort

I’m 5 foot 11 and float around 175lbs and the large size fits me well. The Ultra Tee has  a “sporty” fit without being figure hugging and has lay flat seams that prevent chafing even after hours of hiking. After a lot of use and 20+ washes the collar area has stretched a little, but otherwise the shirt shows no visible signs of wear. The Ultra Tee is also available in a women's model.

In summary the Ultra Tee is a great shirt if you’re looking to invest the money on a high quality Merino wool garment. If you want to follow along on my travels and see where I am now, connect with me on Instagram.

Background

For the last six months the Ultra Tee has been my go-to workout shirt whilst traveling through Asia. I've been using merino wool garments for years and the Ultra Tee holds its own against other big players in the marketplace. The shirt has been widely used in hot humid climates throughout Asia, its quick drying properties and ability to hold the stink at bay make it perfect for travel.
