Merrell Men's Baja Ventilator

rated 4.0 of 5 stars

The Men's Baja Ventilator has been discontinued. If you're looking for something new, check out the best trail shoes for 2024.

These are the best shoes I have ever owned. I have worn out two pairs and am looking to purchase a third pair. There was never a break-in period. I did buy my shoes one size larger than my dress shoes because I do a lot of hiking in the mountains and the extra room keeps my toes from being cramped when going downhill. I also always wear socks and sock liners when hiking to reduce friction on my heels. I have near developed a blister wearing these shoes and they are incredibly lightweight. These shoes are great for summer, my feet never overheat.

Use: mountain hiking

These shoes are OK. I was expecting a pair of good, solid, breathable hiking shoes, but instead these are average athletic shoes. They are comfortable, but not as breathable as I expected from something called "Ventilator." Some of the rubber toe box started splitting after less than 2 years of use, and the lining has been coming apart also. So if you want cool-looking athletic shoes, these are fine. If you want durable hiking shoes, look elsewhere.

Materials: suede and mesh
Use: short dayhikes, working, around town
Break-in Period: none
Weight: ?
Price Paid: $40? On sale

Just bought my second pair. The first pair I wore nearly daily for about five years and the treads were almost flat. I had no splitting problems as the other reviewer, but everyone wears shoes out differently. I wear them in all dry conditions and use them for light hiking/approach with no problem...obviously no rain or heavy mud. A great light hiker that will last a while.
