Not the same package.

Pros

  • Same tasty food

Cons

  • Not vacuum packed
  • Bigger package
  • Tougher to pack
  • Military standards?

I was super thrilled with the Pro Pack when it came out. The bags were much smaller and easy to pack. I could carry three meals for the same space as two of the regular bags. Not now.

For some reason, Mountain House decided we need food that meets military specs for winter patrols, as you can see on the bottom of the new bag.

Ironically, on the top of the old bag, it talks about listening to the needs of backpackers in creating the Pro Pack.

As far as I can tell, the only good thing about the new package is that the food tastes as good. But packing them is a pain. It's a bigger bag and it's not vacuum packed.

I did a little digging and Mountain House is not using MAP instead of vacuum packing the Pro Packs, hence the puffy bags. I don't know why we need that. The food was already good for years and years without having to add nitrogen, which is what MAP is. When I wrote MH about this, the attitude was pretty much we don't care so take it or leave it.

I'm looking for something new.
