Sprayway TL Ascent Jacket

rated 4.5 of 5 stars
Version reviewed: 1998

I spent two months researching which jacket to buy, before I commited myself.

The new version, made of kinetic g-tex as opposed to the original taslan, is much lighter and very flexible. It includes some excellent features such as zipped armpit ventilation holes and a closable fleece lined collar which is excellent at keeping the mountain wind out.

All three drawcords are wraparound so the wind doesn't whip the toggles up into your face as you are walking/climbing.

I liked the jacket so much that I bought some trousers of the same material.

I have owned this jacket for the past six months and have been extremely pleased with it. It is well specified, with side entry pockets (very useful when wearing a pack and harness), map pocket, pit zips and removable hood.

The pit zips are easy to open and close, even when wearing mitts.

My only complaint is that the hood is slightly too small to wear comfortably when climbing with a helmet. I would have preferred a non-removable, but larger fit.

All in all though, an excellent piece of equipment.

Hi there, I bought My TL Ascent in summer 1999, because it met all my requests. It has a great hood, fantastic breatheable/waterproof specifics. It's light (+/- 930g). And it's very strong, I've owned a TNF Stow-away 3 and a TNF Mountain Jacket but wasn't pleased with them. Sadly some bastard dripped wet paint on my TL so I had to buy a new one.

Fabric: Taslan 3-layer Gore-Tex
Price Paid: £330 +/-

Version reviewed: 1996

This is the 1996 version of the jacket (the '97 jacket has softer, Kinetic Gore-Tex), but it's great. It'll stand up to the worst weather, and is highly breathable and abrasion resistant. The hood is fantastic, and the jacket offers excellent all-round protection. The pit zips are also useful when it gets little warm, and the map pocket is enormous.

Fabric: 3-layer Taslan Gore-Tex; 3-layer Impact Gore-Tex
Price Paid: 270

This jacket is easy to wear because of an additional coating on the 3-layer laminated Gore-Tex fabric. When this additional coating absorbs water, dark spots inside the jacket are seen, however, this is not leaking but shine-through.

Fabric: GoreTex
Price Paid: 769 dutch guilders
