Excelent navigation tool of small size and minimal weight.

Pros

  • Small base plate
  • Easy to read and use
  • Lightweight
  • Does the job for many years
  • No maintenance

Cons

  • I have found none

I have absolutely no idea how long ago I purchased my compass, but it was certainly after coming to New Zealand as it is balanced for the southern hemisphere. It has been attached via the lanyard to a variety of packs over the years readily accessible for when needed.

I am old school and only use map and compass and I can honestly say this has stood me in good stead. The base plate and movable bezel allow for presetting deliberate aim-off to reach out of sight objectives over long distance. Short disance orienteering no problem.

The only downside compared to modern technology is lack of good internal lighting; this said red light does not destroy night vision.

My Sunto may be battered and bruised showing the many years of use and abuse but my grandson has put the order in for inheriting it when I take to that long trail in the sky. A truly great piece of kit.

Great compass but...

Pros

  • Anti-slip rubber pads
  • Calibrated for the northern hemisphere
  • Base plate magnifying lens
  • Base plate triangle and oval stencils
  • Luminous markings for low light usage
  • Accurate base plate scales
  • Lanyard and key
  • Base plate declination offset scale
  • Rotating bezel housing with oil-dampened needle

Cons

  • Susceptible to bubbles in bezel housing

Though no longer in production, the Finnish-produced Suunto M-3 CM is a capable compass for the price. The third of my four compasses, it offers steady and sturdy use in the field. Lightweight and nimble, the M-3 offers luminous markings for low light usage and an oil-dampened magnetic needle.

I like the large base plate magnifier, the triangular and circular control marking stencils. The scales are readable and well-placed.

The only issue I have with the Suunto M-3 CM was that over time a sizable bubble developed in the oil-filled bezel housing and I'm not sure of the bubble's effect on the needle's functional accuracy.
