The North Face Firefly

rated 4.0 of 5 stars

The Firefly has been discontinued. If you're looking for something new, check out the best three-season tents for 2024.

A very good tent. The design is excellent, as are the materials and the detailing.

The design is very wind resistant, especially when pitched into the wind. The largely mesh interior tent is great for ventilation, and definitely gives a more spacious feel, but is less suitable for cold conditions encountered at the extremes of 3-season camping.

The vestibule is nice, large enough for 2 people's backpacking gear. There are several tie-out points on the fly, which are very helpful. The tent is a little heavier than non-free standing models from other manufacturers -- but I think the fact that it is free-standing is worth the extra weight.

This tent is more of a 2+ season tent, both because of the mesh interior and because the design does not shed snow as well as a classic dome structure.

This is a very luxurious tent for one person. It is cozy for two, and three is possible, but is rather tight.

Problems: my fly began to leak after three years of use, probably due to UV damage (although the tent was well treated). North Face graciously sent me a brand new Starfire -- the 3+ season version of the tent. The Starfire fly fits on the old Firefly body, so now I have a modifiable set-up. I can choose light weight and ventilation, or heavier weight but more warmth.

Overall, I like this tent a lot. The design is very efficient, and definitely wind-eating.

Design: 3 Season Modified Dome
Sleeps: 2
Ease of Setup: Very easy with the No-Hitch-Pitch (now called Quick Pitch) system
Weight: approx. 5 lbs.

A little bulky and heavy, but quick and easy to set up, gear pouches, enough room for one with gear or two without. Sturdy materials in soothing color and surprisingly good at muffling sound. Kept wind out, but not cold; well ventilated. I got mine for a song at a camping outfitter. If you see it for sale used (I think the model may have been discontinued, unfortunately) do not hesitate to buy it if it looks like it's in good condition and is under $150.
