Sea to Summit Aeros Ultralight Pillow

The Aeros Ultralight Pillow is an accessory that is so lightweight (under 2oz) that it can be an easy addition to any hiker's kit—whether car camping or thru-hiking a long distance trail. Used in conjunction with any of the Sea to Summit sleeping pad line, the soft underside of the pillow securely attaches to the pad using their proprietary Pillow Lock System.

The Sea to Summit Aeros Ultralight Pillow is not a brand new product, but the updated Pillow lock system is a welcome update to Sea to Summit's sleeping pad line. Having tested many different camp pillows, this is the first system that truly keeps the pillow secure all night long. 

The Aeros Ultralight Pillow has a simple, easy to use dual valve system. One allows inflation with a one-way valve, the other for instant deflation.  

 The Aeros Pillow is extremely packable, nearly the size of a packed head net. 

After approximately seven months of testing, the Aeros Ultralight Pillow appears to be holding up very well to use. This appears to be on par with many other Sea to Summit products used and tested. 

The Sea to Summit Ether Light XR was tested from late summer 2025 into early spring 2026 over the course of approximately ten nights on or near the Appalachian Trail in the mid-Atlantic USA.

Multiple different outdoor gear brand pillows have been used over the last several decades—several inflatable pillows failing, many pillows slipping and sliding!

Excellent support and comfort for your head, for a good night's sleep.

I have tried many a backpacking pillow over the years, but have found most of them just not quite right. See my review of the Feathered Friends Geoduck pillow as an example.

Having purchased one of Sea to Summit's ultralight pads last season, and finding it to fit my needs perfectly, I thought this might be the one.

The pad packs down small, and is so light (2.5 oz), you won't even notice that you've put it in your pack.

The Aero has the same dual-valve that the sleeping pad has, so inflating is a breeze (8-9 puffs for me). With the inner valve open it deflates quickly. One small quibble here... because the valve is in the center of the pillow (underneath), it is difficult to get all of the air out when rolling it up for the stuff sack. I sort of had to roll it from both sides, then unroll one side, and finish rolling it to stuff. It took a couple of tries the first time, but I think I got it figured out.

The pillow is very comfortable and supportive under the head. And the double-valve permits one to fine tune the inflation. So if you like it really firm, you can do that; or if you like it a little squishier, you can let a little air out.

My biggest complaint is, that the pillow wouldn't stay on top of the sleeping pad. That was a sleeping pad made by the same manufacturer! I found that by putting it inside my sleeping bag, the hood kept it in place, and it worked out great. But if there was some way to get it to stay put better, it would be perfect.

I used this on a three-day backpacking trip in the Hetch Hetchy region of Yosemite, in early spring (wet and chilly) conditions, and it worked great. I slept well, and appreciated not having a sore neck when I got up in the morning. All in all, the closest to perfect I've found (so far)!

I used to have a lot of problems with camping pillows: not anymore.

I used to use clothes as a pillow. Problem: my head would always slide off to one side or the other and the "pillow" was inevitably lumpy. Result: bad sleep.

Then I bought my first inflatable. This was a dramatic improvement but... the material was cold and hard to the skin. But still it was a big improvement.

Then I bought this pillow! Wow! I've had it for a year now on ~6 trips. No complaints about comfort, feel, warmth, nothing except the base material could be changed to something more sticky especially since I was using it with a Sea to Summit mattress which has a very smooth surface.

The top and bottom of the pillow are made of the same Coolmax fabric. But that criticism is very minor. Perhaps I should buy the Coolmax fitted sheet for the mattress that would solve the problem and weigh next to nothing!

Both the pillow and the mattress (a Comfort Light Insulated S to S mattress) work with the same Jet Stream Pump Sack. They all use the same valve system - which works very well to seal and to evacuate air. Brilliant!

Small, light, compact. Didn't realize how much I needed this thing until after I'd bought it. 

Waste of money.

This pillow is quite comfortable, too bad it doesn't last. I've gone through three of them in a couple of months. I've spoken with the company on several occasions and, like many gear companies, they feed me bull.

That's OK though, I just won't do business with them. Don't get me wrong, they will "make it right," but when they tell me that they have less than 1% failure rate I call "bull." When I did finally do that, the PR guy finally shut up and let me talk. I explained to him that my experience was 100% failure rate.

He then proceeded to tell me that the pillow didn't fail, there were pinholes in it. Why do these companies lie?

Either way, don't buy this pillow; it will most likely fail. I told them I don't care for a replacement. I'd rather use my dry sack with some extra clothes. I don't do business with liars if I can help it and they lied to me on at least one other occasion.

Oh well, glad to know now than later I suppose. I would not take this pillow for free, as it has been offered AND they have lost a customer although they actually make some decent stuff. I hope this review is helpful.
