Tepui Expedition Series Gear Bag

photo: Tepui Expedition Series Gear Bag pack duffel

Bomb proof fabric and excellent construction make this a great duffle for backpack travel protection or just hitting the road. A washable water resistant finish keeps the contents clean and the outside looking new.

Pros

  • 3.5 cubic feet of capacity
  • Multiple handles
  • Heavy duty water resistant fabric
  • Zippered mesh inner compartment
  • Outside pocket and gear hold downs

Cons

  • Only one shoulder strap
  • A little bulky when full

Tepui, the company that is best known for their wild cartop tents, also makes some very good expedition style duffles. I've had their duffle bag since January and have taken it on a couple of trips for testing.

This is a large size duffle with interior space a bit over 3.5 square feet. Its bright orange exterior is comprised of heavyweight polyester canvas treated with a synthetic resin to provide both water and abrasive resistance. Heavy duty zippers open from either side and provide an opening that allows full access to the interior.

The inside of the lid features a large zippered mesh pocket. One outside mesh pocket along with a handy lashing gear system provides additional gear storage. Two sets of outside adjustable straps allow the duffle to be adjusted smaller if necessary. The bottom of the bag features four rubber grip feet which keep it from sliding around on smooth surfaces.

Tepui has supplied lift handles on each end, two carrying handles and a shoulder strap so the duffle can be lifted and carried in a variety of ways.

When I first received the Tepui duffle I thought for a minute it was a dry bag because of the material. The only place where water can leak into this bag would be through the zippers and they are covered by a large overlap of the lid. This has made the bag great for air travel during what has been a very wet winter and spring in my part of the country.

I can easily pack a week's worth of clothes in this duffle and still have to use the adjustable side straps to make the bag smaller. Fully loaded I was able to take it as a carry-on and fit it easily into an overhead bin. I can also fit my Granite Gear Crown2 60 liter backpack into the duffle fully loaded which makes taking my pack on an airplane safe and easy.

The bright orange color makes it easy to spot on the luggage carousel and would make a great spotting beacon in the wilderness. Packing and access to my belongings is super easy since the lid opens fully and the handy mesh pocket is great for separating out items that I need quick access to.

Once fully loaded I really got to see how large this duffle really is. The adjustable handles and shoulder strap work well, but because of its size, the bag can be a bit unwieldy. The bag has buckles for two shoulder straps but is only outfitted with one strap for some reason. A second strap is needed so the duffle could be worn like a backpack which would make carrying it much easier.

The bag is holding up really well and its easy to clean after a trip. I plan on using it for everything from overseas backpacking trips to canoe trips.
