The North Face Bering Jacket

rated 4.5 of 5 stars

The Bering Jacket has been discontinued. If you're looking for something new, check out the best synthetic insulated jackets for 2024.

I've used this jacket mostly for skiing and a few light snowshoeing/mountaineering trips and I have been satisfied. It is very light and is great for those times when you just want some insurance. The jacket has held up to some pretty heavy wind gusts without being too drafty and i've worn it in the 15-20 degree range and got by with just a midweight capiline. The pockets are sizable and insulated and there are velcro tabs on the cuffs which are great for cinching down over gloves.

I have one complaint about the shell fabric though: it is not very sturdy as it is designed to be light, and rips easily in the places where it is not reinforced (shoulders, forearms). I think it has been discontinued and I have seen it for under $100. A great insulater for those cold days on the slopes or high peaks.

Bought this jacket at REI b/c TNF discontinued it. It's a great jacket for cold winter days...even in wet weather since the polarguard works well when wet. The fabric is tear-prone in the non-reinforced areas, but it breathes well. I'd recommend this jacket to anyone, esp. if you pick it up on sale.

Fabric: Diamond Lite/Taslan rein.
Fill: polarguard 3d
Price Paid: $50 disc. sale
