If you run 4,300 miles across the Sahara in 111 days -- that's nearly 40 miles a day for four straight months -- you are harder core than I can ever hope to be. Uber ultra runners Charlie Engle and Ray Zahab gave a talk yesterday about their Magellan-sponsored run, which they finished, along with Kevin Lin, in February. The trio started in Senegal and ran through Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Libya, and Egypt to the Red Sea, over sand dunes, on roads and trails, and through what they termed “hell grass." The run is the subject of the upcoming documentary Running the Sahara and is part of an effort to raise money and awareness for clean water through H2O Africa. After listening to Ray and Charlie talk and seeing their pictures I really want to see this movie. I bow at their amazing feet.
