Patagonia Provisions Organic Green Lentil Soup

rated 5 of 5 stars Excellent balance of flavors and a delightful texture. I really enjoy this soup; it's probably my favorite on the trail. It has bulgur wheat along with the lentils, which gives it a great texture. The flavor is quite good, although I add just a touch of garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper to punch it up. At about 100 calories per ounce, it's good for packing and thoroughly satisfying. There is no issue with reconstitution—everything cooks up perfectly with about five minutes of hard… Full review

Packit Gourmet Dottie's Chicken & Dumplings

rated 3 of 5 stars Good flavor, but terrible aftertaste. I purchased a large variety of different meals from several manufacturers to find what we would like to bring on several upcoming bikepacking excursions. This was the worst so far. The initial flavor is good, but there is a strong chemical aftertaste. We separated the meat and found it to be the culprit. My wife purchased freeze-dried chicken breast from another company and it had the same chemical taste. Almost like it was marinated in paint thinner before… Full review

Good To-Go Kale and White Bean Stew

rated 0.5 of 5 stars Vile, horrid and unfit for consumption. There's nothing redeemable to say about this, even though it was "free" as part of a sample pack...couldn't even return it for credit. I added bacon bits to try and taste something—the white beans or kale even absorbed that flavor. Full review

Mountain House Biscuits and Gravy

rated 5 of 5 stars I started carrying these a few years ago, used to have freeze dried pork chops that were a real treat from typical trail food but these are just great with a cup of coffee. Of all places I happened to find a rack of these at Walmart and bought one for a week-long backpacking trip. After having for breakfast quickly realized I should have brought more. Normal breakfast during such trips is rather unfulfilling on a crispy morning over a small fire. I have also started carrying dehydrated bacon, so… Full review

Mountain House Biscuits and Gravy

rated 5 of 5 stars This is what backpacking food should taste like! Mountain House has hit a home run with the Biscuits and Gravy, packing in much more flavor than expected, and really getting the textures spot-on. We take this meal along on pack trips, motorcycle tours, and I usually have one in my work truck for long jobs in the mountains. Adding an egg, either fired or hard-boiled, extends the meal considerably, and really gives a boost of nice protein energy. Let me start out by admitting that I am a big fan of… Full review

Clif Nut Butter Filled Bar

rated 4 of 5 stars This is a nice addition to the Clif Bar lineup of energy bars. The Peanut Butter flavored Nut Butter filled Clif Bar has an appealing softer consistency than the classic Clif Bars, which combined with a great taste, make these bars a nice option as a trail bar to throw in your pack for a day hike or a through hike. Years ago I used to be a big fan of classic Clif Bars, but as other manufactures brought a seeming endless number of options to the market, I started shifting to other trail bars that… Full review

Good To-Go New England Corn Chowder

rated 4 of 5 stars With complex flavors and an intoxicating aroma, this meal is particularly well-suited for winter backcountry trips. C'mon, who doesn't love a good chowder after a day in the snow? It includes dehydrated fish flakes, which was a pleasant surprise, but I did experience some rehydration issues with other ingredients. To give you a little background on how and in what conditions I tested this meal, below is a description of two separate tests.   Testing Meal #1 - After a 3.5-mile sunset hike in chilly,… Full review

Good To-Go Kale and White Bean Stew

rated 3.5 of 5 stars Good To-Go Kale and White Bean Soap is good option for people looking for a reasonably lightweight backpacking food that tastes and looks like real food (because it is), is good for you, is gluten-free, and a vegan product. Overview First off I need to confess that I am not in any way a foodie and am one of those people who get excited when the McRib is back on the menu at McDonalds, so keep that in mind as I share my thoughts on Good To-Go’s Kale and White Bean Stew. The Good To-Go Kale and White… Full review

AlpineAire Foods Rice Burrito Bowl with Beef

rated 5 of 5 stars A tasty, filling meal you can be nom nom nomming in 15 minutes. Ingredients are all FOOD, no added chemicals—all minerals and nutrients are naturally occurring in the ingredients. Received as part of my Reviewer of the Month prize package. Today I went snowshoeing for a couple hours, and decided to bring along the AlpineAire Rice Burrito Bowl Flavored With Beef and eat it for review. From the pouch front: Cilantro lime rice flavored with real beef, black beans, corn, red & green bell peppers… Full review
