Spyder Dolomite Jacket

rated 5.0 of 5 stars
photo: Spyder Dolomite Jacket down insulated jacket

Snug fit and packable down jacket. 700 fill power, yet still smaller and not intrusive. Water resistant but enough room to have hard shell on top comfortably. I recommend this jacket.

Pros

  • Well insulated
  • Packable
  • Lifetime warranty

Cons

  • Lack of inside pocket

This is my first, nicer (more expensive) down jacket so this rating is just based on my experience with THIS jacket only, no comparison to others.

I have the sharp lime color and didn't realize when I purchased this from an online site, that it comes with a lifetime warranty. Big plus. I'm 5'8" and 150 lbs and purchased a Medium.

Having not tried it on but only reading reviews I wasn't sure on the fit. I like more athletic-fitting clothes and don't want to look like a big marshmallow. No problem here, I have plenty of room to maneuver my body and arms.

Some smaller features include a chin guard at the top of the zipper and its packable size. I can pack it down to the size of 1 or 1.5 bricks (only comparison I can think of). Not bad when on long excursions. This version does not have the hood. It does have three pockets, all exterior. One at the left chest, two on the side. I wish there would be one pocket on the inside, but it's nothing to cry about.

I've worn this in temps in the 40's (with a shirt only underneath) but would still feel comfortable layering and going into low 30's no problem.  It's only water resistant but can be worn under a rain shell. I haven't done so yet, but my Mountain Hardwear fits well on top.

The texture is like most down jackets, doesn't feel as abrasion-resistant as thick winter skiing jackets, but not bad either.

UPDATE: After making the foolish decision to wash the jacket with mild soap (not detergent) and putting in the dry cycle only once, I switched to Nikwax Down Wash. When washing with soap and one cycle in the wash, the down was flat and even clumped in some areas. I used the Nikwax and the loft has returned, it even cleaned some dirtier areas (neck, cuffs) which weren't cleaned the first time. Check my review for Nikwax, it'll help!
