Good To-Go Kale and White Bean Stew

Vile, horrid and unfit for consumption. There's nothing redeemable to say about this, even though it was "free" as part of a sample pack...couldn't even return it for credit. I added bacon bits to try and taste something—the white beans or kale even absorbed that flavor. Full review

Good To-Go Kale and White Bean Stew

Good To-Go Kale and White Bean Soap is good option for people looking for a reasonably lightweight backpacking food that tastes and looks like real food (because it is), is good for you, is gluten-free, and a vegan product. Overview First off I need to confess that I am not in any way a foodie and am one of those people who get excited when the McRib is back on the menu at McDonalds, so keep that in mind as I share my thoughts on Good To-Go’s Kale and White Bean Stew. The Good To-Go Kale and White… Full review

Nomad Nutrition Indian Red Lentil Stew

A tasty Indian stew that reminds me of a classic (but slightly less spicy) Dal. As I’ve written with the other Nomad reviews: this is my new favorite brand of dehydrated backpacking food. Ingredients: Potatoes, Carrots, Red Lentils*, Coconut Milk*, Onions, Peas, Sundried Tomatoes*, Olive Oil*, Garlic*, Spices*, Sea Salt*.   *Certified Organic Ingredient. Nutrition: (for the 100-gram package) Calories 680, Carbs 93g, Sugars (10 g), Protein 24g Prologue: When I was messaging back and forth with… Full review

Patagonia Provisions Organic Savory Grains Mushroom + KAMUT

This is a tasty organic grain blend with a nice earthy flavor and good protein (15 grams per package). I think it's best suited as a side dish. Fishermen, this would sit nicely beside a fire-roasted brook trout! Ingredients: Organic Kamut Khorasan Bulgur Wheat, Organic Bulgur Wheat, Organic Dehydrated Portabella Mushrooms, Organic Shiitake Mushroom Powder, Organic Red Quinoa, Organic Dehydrated Chopped Onion, Salt, Organic Yeast Extract, Organic Onion Powder, Organic Ground Rice Hulls, Organic Sunflower… Full review

Nomad Nutrition Irish Shepherd's Pie

A very familiar tasting and well-balanced meal, this one is like the backpacking equivalent of comfort food. A great bonus is the 225 calories per ounce which is excellent caloric density for carrying on a long trek. As I’ve written with the other Nomad reviews: this is my new favorite brand of dehydrated backpacking food. Ingredients: Potatoes, Green Lentils*, Carrots, Coconut Milk*, Onions, Peas, Corn, Sundried Tomatoes*, Olive Oil*, Garlic*, Spices*, Sea Salt*. *Certified Organic Ingredient. Full review

Nomad Nutrition Kathmandu Curry

A tasty curry dish that surprised me with its freshness; this one doesn’t taste rehydrated. I’ve never knowingly had a Nepalese-style curry, but if this is representative, I’m a fan. I just wish there was more in the package. As I’ll mention in all the Nomad reviews: I consider this the best brand of dehydrated, prepackaged food I’ve tried to date. It’s an expensive but high quality product. Prologue: When I was messaging back and forth with Alicia (Trailspace Co-Founder and Editor)… Full review

Nomad Nutrition Hungarian Goulash

A delicious and simple dehydrated meal with good caloric density (176 calories per ounce) for backpackers that prepares easily and satisfies. There is a naturalness to this dish (and this brand in general) that makes it seem as if this is some long-standing favorite food, even though I had never had it before. This brand is the best dehydrated food I’ve tried to date. It’s too pricey to be a staple for me, but worth it for that special trip or occasion. Prologue: When I was messaging back and… Full review

Harmony House Gourmet Soup & Chili Blends Sampler

Vegan meal mixes with imaginative names, but they don't deliver on taste or calories. They can be rescued by adding fats or other extras, so they might work for some people. “Mighty thin stew, though, You could read a magazine right through it.” —Woody Guthrie, Talking Dust Bowl Blues OK, they aren’t quite that transparent, but that song came to mind as my wife and I passed around the first four of these trial-size soups and stews that Harmony House has offered up for backpackers. They just… Full review

OMeals Brown Rice, Quinoa & Lentils

It's good food, heats very well, but despite company claims as the backpacking food that'll change backpacking, each meal is so heavy that they are really only good for activities like canoeing/rafting, day hiking, car camping. I stopped by REI Albuquerque to get some food for an additional setup week at my camp at Burning Man.  I got items from Mountain House, Backpacker's Pantry, etc and they had something new, self-heating OMeals, so I bought eight meals. They are ready-to-eat, not freeze-dried… Full review
