Marmot Highlander Down Hoody

Terrific climbing and backpacking layer. Bought this jacket recently to replace a down jacket that was 16 years old. Man, have they improved down jackets over the years! As a climber I am always after a jacket with a hood. This one fits easily over my helmet and is not too baggy without it. The fit is close enough to fit well under my hardshell (Marmot Exum Ridge Jacket) and roomy enough to easily go over my active layers. It is terrific as a belay jacket for both ice and rock climbing, and is… Full review

Rab Continuum Hoodie

With great expectations come great disappointments, and I was hugely disappointed. This high-end jacket had all the right specs, features, and review, suited exactly to my needs. But being incredibly fragile together with other quality issues left me with no choice but to return it. Although I have a decent experience in trekking and thru-hiking, I never owned a down jacket. As I always aspire to upgrade my gear, I realized that if I want to travel lighter, I need a down jacket. The main purpose… Full review

Black Diamond Vision Down Parka

Toughness unheard of in a down jacket coupled with smart features and class-leading weight savings earn a place in my mountaineering kit for Black Diamond's Vision Down Parka. The Vision Down Parka can bring that extra degree of safety when Mother Nature attacks. The Black Vision Down Parka was the winner of the 2020 Backcountry Magazine Editors’ Choice Award. According to Black Diamond: "the Black Diamond Vision Down Parka is our warmest insulated jacket for the coldest conditions and biggest… Full review

Helly Hansen Rivaridge Puffy Jacket

Warm and waterproof, but also bulky and heavy, the Rivaridge Puffy Jacket is an uncompromising jacket for cold-weather downhill skiing (and maybe long, windy, winter walks on the beach). It has all the right bells and whistles to keep a lift riding skier comfortable and connected in both up- and downhill modes, but it's not really practical for backcountry skiing. In Norwegian, “uvær” (unweather) is a general-purpose word for bad weather, and here that usually means blowing rain or snow, sometimes… Full review

Arc'teryx Thorium AR Hoody

Good fit, warm. Jacket is comfortable and warm as outer layer without midlayer to 4-5C. Problem with leakage of feather through inner lining brought to attention of Arc'teryx shortly after purchasing and advised this was normal initially but would disappear with use. Have now worn for three winters and feathers still leaking through inner lining when wearing light wool sweater. Full review

Mountain Hardwear Super/DS StretchDown Hooded Down Jacket

Comfortable lightweight and seems to keep me warm (California). Styling is unique. Stretch fabric is a must have! Fits smaller—I wear small, medium fits me nicely. Lots of favorable reviews out there. I have not used the jacket yet for outdoor activities. Just work and errands because I don’t want to take it off.  :) I have read numerous reviews stating it has great durability and warmth. And it seems to. Read very few negative comments other than the hood size and adjustment (lack of). I am… Full review

Eddie Bauer First Ascent Peak XV Parka

A full featured alpine/expedition parka advertised good to -30° F. At its $249 sale price this parka was a great value from its $499 MSRP.  I bought this parka both for bitter cold alpine skiing and as a "camp parka" when winter camping. The size large fits me well at 190 lbs, 5' 10" tall. MATERIALS: It compares most closely with Patagonia's Fitz Roy alpine parka both in design and down fill quality. the PEAK XV Parka will not pack quite as small as the Fitzroy  and other similar alpine parkas… Full review

Eddie Bauer First Ascent Downlight Hooded Jacket

A light and well made 800 fill down jacket for 3-4 season use. Very packable and good for layering or extending sleeping bag warmth. I bought this 800 fill down "puffy" on a 50% off sale because I needed it for higher altitude three-season camping. Mine is a nice "electric blue" color., the one you see here in my avatar where I'm holding my grandson. I've had mine for six years and it shows no signs of wear from skiing, backpacking, and around-town use. Its down maintains excellent loft, despite… Full review

Rab Batura Jacket

Looking for a durable, seriously warm, water resistant, well featured down jacket and weight isn't a deal-breaker? Rab’s Batura II may just fit the bill. Bought the Batura II in XL size (containing nearly 480g fill-weight of down) in the Black colour with Horizon (Red) details for planned autumn/winter sub-polar and mountain expeditions. Down The Batura II uses over 450grams fill-weight (in size Large) of 800 fill-power (by US standards. Equating to approx. 743 fill-power per EU rating) of… Full review
